Outpourings: Rest, My Soul

Did Christmas leave you rested, or exhausted?

Oddly enough, though we worship the coming of our Savior in a spirit of expectation and worship, Christmas leaves most of us pooped.

Why, I wonder? It makes me curious as to how we can completely miss the importance of resting during this holy season.

Yet, God asks us to rest weekly. It is a command. Honor the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Holy means set apart.

Make the Sabbath day different, set apart from the rest. God gives us rest and says that it is good.

Do you need to hear that today? That rest is, in fact, good?

Rest, as commanded by our Lord, is important for a variety of reasons:

ONE: Rest demonstrates that we trust God. If we allow ourselves time off, then we are telling God that we trust Him to provide.

TWO: Rest encourages fullness of presence. When we are able to separate work from play, and work from rest, the separation between the different aspects of life is clearer. We are able to more fully invest in our work, in our play, and in our rest.

THREE: Rest designates our human nature from God's perfection. Although God never has limitations, we do. Sometimes, it is hard to admit that we need to rest...but without it, we break. We are limited and finite, and by resting we admit that we cannot do it all.

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28

Jesus longs to take your heaviest burdens, as well as your holiday exhaustion. Let us honor Him by resting in His loving arms.

Is it hard for you to rest? What prevents you from resting?
