Friday Funday: Are You Teachable?

How do you react when you realize something needs to change in your life?

Do you put a wall up, claiming, "Not me.  Certainly not me..." or do you embrace the need for change with a hollering, "Let's DO this!"

I have been in both seats.  A few weeks ago in NYC, the founding pastor of Hillsong United gave a sermon on the humbling power of embracing a teachable heart.  I was struck to the core by his lessons, realizing that I could come to embrace more of my truest self if only I opened my heart for change.  I did not want to be like the Rich Young Ruler...

I think it's a solid concept, and one that Jesus calls us to learn.  I found this short quiz in Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver (I have only mentioned this book, say, five times on the blog!  It's a fantastic, much-needed read).  Take a couple of minutes and have fun filling it out honestly--see what it reveals about your heart.

"Are You Teachable?

Consider the following statements to give you an idea of your teachability quotient.  Answer (U) for Usually; (S) for Sometimes; and (R) for Rarely.

1. I feel comfortable asking for advice.

2. I easily admit when I'm wrong.

3. I enjoy reading for information rather than escape.

4. I enjoy listening to other people's thoughts and opinions without feeling the need to express my own.

5. I'm able to receive criticism without being hurt.

6. When I read something in the Bible, I automatically think of ways to apply it.

7. I enjoy church and Bible classes and usually take notes.

8. I'm able to disagree with someone without feeling like I have to debate the issue.

9. I'm willing to look at all sides of a situation before I form an opinion.

10. I'd rather be righteous that always have to be "right".

Give yourself 3 points for each U answer, 2 points for each S, and 0 points for every R.  Then add the numbers.  If you scored 24-30 points, you are well on your way to a teachable heart.  If you scored 15-23, keep at it!  You are definitely trainable.  If you scored 0-14, you may need to make your teachability quotient a matter of prayer, because you'll find a teachable heart is one of life's greatest treasures.
