When I think about Independence Day, images of the American Dream come to mind: "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". More powerful and intriguing, though, is the promise of God's freedom that we find all over Scripture.
Be encouraged this Fourth of July by five passages on freedom:
ONE
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
(Isaiah 61:1 ESV)
TWO
For one who has died has been set free from sin.
(Romans 6:7 ESV)
THREE
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
(John 8:31-32 ESV)
FOUR
...that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
(Romans 8:21 ESV)
FIVE
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
(2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV)
How has God set you free? What other verses come to mind?
